“Daylight,” she said. He waited.
“Not a speech. Not the Tuesday message. That version stays on read.” She picked up her charger. “If you miss the way we used to talk, miss it at lunch. In a room with windows. Not because a flood trapped us on the same floor.”
Rick nodded once. No “I can be better.” No upgrade.

“Lunch,” he said. “Not late.”
Sheba almost smiled. Almost. Then she walked to the lift without looking back at the corner where the treaty had run out of wood. Outside, the street was just a street again. Buses moving. People going to work like the night had not tried to rewrite them. At 12:04 he was already at the café. Two seats. Phone face-down. No brochure. “This is the version that gets a reply,” she said. He didn’t reach for her hand. He pushed the extra chair in so it stayed at the table. “Good,” he said. “I was tired of performing the distance.”
They ordered in daylight. The old message stayed unread. The new one didn’t need to be sent.

The act dropped. The rule that remained was simple: if it matters, it survives the morning.
