Learn black history. Read texts written by Black people. Watch documentaries filmed by Black people. Speak to Black elders. Ask questions about their experiences, and what they’ve seen and heard. Visit black history museums. Preserve black history.
Black culture has always celebrated excellence, period.
We hype Eminem in rap.
We gas up Cooper DeJean making plays.
CMC. Maxx Crosby. Larry Bird before them. If you stand out in a space dominated by us, you get love. No hesitation.
But when Black people celebrate our own firsts, our milestones, our history… suddenly it’s “why does race matter?”
That’s the part that doesn’t add up.
Celebrating someone breaking barriers isn’t exclusion. It’s recognition.
We’ve been giving that energy to everybody forever.
So why is it a problem when we give it to ourselves?
