In fact Ashoka was one of the most violent emperors in Indian history. He unleashed a full-on state pogrom on the Ajivikas (Jains), ordering 18,000 executions in Pundavardhana, just because one man drew a painting of Buddha bowing to Nirgrantha Jnatiputra. He did the same in Pataliputra, where he had a Nirgrantha follower and his entire family burnt alive in their house for the same offense. He then offered a public reward for the public to hunt and produce murdered Jain heads.

He ensured that several Hindu rituals & festivals were banned, while his cruel Dhamma Mahāmātras investigated, enforced and punished anyone who didn’t follow Buddhist rules. These Mahāmātras were a coercive state-militia who openly tortured and killed civilians in the name of investigating “heresy,” policing sectarian behavior, and punishing anyone who violated Buddhist dhamma norms. Even Romila Thapar admits that the function of Ashoka’s Dhamma Mahāmātras was to enforce state surveillance and punishment - not to spread the joy of peaceful non-violence.

The myth that he became a non-violent Buddhist after the Kalinga war is busted by Ashoka’s own edicts replete with chilling threats of violence. In Rock Edict 13, right after lamenting Kalinga’s suffering, he turns around and menacingly warns the forest people/Adivasis and threatens them that he still has the power to punish and kill them, so they better “turn away from evil ways” if they don’t want to be “killed for their crimes.” In other edicts, he gives his Rajukas full authority to carry out capital punishment, mass imprisonment, frequent executions, and systemic cruel penalties.

The fake myth of Ashoka as a gentle, violence-shunning Buddhist cuddle bear was created by the British to paint Hinduism as violent and regressive.
