I can confirm that I will be requesting the permission of the NEC to stand in the Makerfield by-election.
I grew up in this area and have lived here for 25 years. I care deeply about it and its people. I know they have been let down by national politics.
Ten years ago, I decided to leave Westminster. Why? Because, after 16 years, I came to the conclusion that our national political system does not work for areas like ours. I learnt this fighting its failure to invest in the Wigan borough, for justice for the Hillsborough families and against its treatment of Greater Manchester during the pandemic.
Over the last decade, I have been challenging this failure from the outside and building a new and better way of doing politics. We have built Greater Manchester into the fastest-growing city-region in the UK and put buses back under public control, introducing a £2 fare cap to help people with cost-of-living pressures.
However, there is only so much that can be done from Greater Manchester. Much bigger change is needed at a national level if everyday life is to be made more affordable again. This is why I now seek people’s support to return to Parliament: to bring the change we have brought to Greater Manchester to the whole of the UK and make politics work properly for people.
Millions are struggling and they need the Labour Government to succeed. It has already made changes to make life better for them in its first two years. After this week, we owe it to people to come back together as a Labour movement, giving the Prime Minister and the Government the space and stability they need as the by-election takes place.
I want to recognise the difficult decision taken by Josh Simons and the sacrifice he and his family are making. I have worked closely with him as Mayor on issues like flooding and illegal waste dumping and have seen first-hand how effective he has been. He has put the communities of Makerfield first, made a real difference for them and should take great pride in that.
Finally, I truly do not take a single vote for granted and will work hard to regain the trust of people in the Makerfield constituency, many of whom have long supported our party but lost faith in recent times. We will change Labour for the better and make it a party you can believe in again.

We’re backing the next chapter of South Yorkshire’s industrial heritage, with over 400 new industrial jobs through this major hydrogen investment.
This is our clean energy mission in action: rebuilding our energy security with clean homegrown power and good industrial jobs.
Disagree. The climate crisis is very real, as is the energy crisis. We can’t keep going back to oil and gas.
The war in Iran has again shown in stark terms Britain’s over reliance on oil.
Sustainable, cheaper, greener energy exists, we need to invest in and understand it.
🌍 Protecting people is the first duty of a Government. At present, the UK is deeply unprepared for the increasing threat of floods, droughts, wildfires and food shortages.
We need an urgent response and we won’t let the Government ignore warnings.

The UK is currently not on track to meet most of the Environmental Improvement Plan’s nature goals.
At today’s EAC session, I asked the Secretary of State how the government plans to ensure the UK meets its international nature targets before COP17.
Labour can’t be the party of unity when we're conceding on division. We need to reunite our voter coalition around radical policies that impact everyday challenges.
Hard lessons need to be learnt from coming third in Gorton and Denton.
We need a bold vision of what we stand for- one which breathes life back into our broken public services, lifts living standards and confronts inequality head-on.
Labour must reverse this decision if it is serious about putting country before party.
We urge the party to reconsider in the interests of taking on Reform and building the strongest possible team in Westminster.

Nature isn't a block to building- it's an asset.
I asked the Minister about the rationale behind proposals which could allow some sites to bypass Biodiversity Net Gain rules.
This morning @_OliviaBlake explains why government CANNOT achieve aims to end child poverty & homelessness as long as immigrant families are excluded from support❤️
Proposed longer routes to settlement must not be applied retrospectively to migrants who have built lives here!
In the fight against climate change, nature remains our most powerful ally. Restoring ecosystems strengthens economies: harvests are less vulnerable to droughts, and forests can continue to act as the planet’s lungs, writes Labour MP @_OliviaBlake https://t.co/Q8y93TJvYC
It was lovely to visit Support Dogs UK in Sheffield this afternoon.
Tune in to Radio 4’s Saturday Live tomorrow morning to hear about their fantastic work.
Yesterday, the Environmental Audit Committee held an evidence session around forever chemicals which are linked to various health and environmental concerns.
I asked experts how ‘essential use’ of these chemicals can be defined, and in which sectors they should be phased out.
APPG member @_OliviaBlake urged the government to continue leadership shown at the COP30 negotiations when championing a road map for fossil fuel phase out by ruling out extraction at Rosebank.
1/ The affordability crisis is the biggest issue facing this country. That is why I am proud that this Budget acts to take £150 of costs off people’s energy bills.
The ‘pull-factor’ myth isn’t just wrong - it’s a convenient excuse for harsher policies that don’t stop crossings, only strip people of their humanity.
Deterrents just don’t work.
The fixation on so-called ‘pull factors’ is one of the most persistent myths in the recent migration debate.
Labour must not capitulate.

The human cost of these immigration reforms cannot be overstated.
Children growing up under these proposed rules will experience nothing but uncertainty and fear.
