Using respectability as the catch-all for every instance of a standard is exhausting.
The crazy part is how many young adults don’t know how to dress appropriately when the time comes because (according to them) they’ve never been expected to do it.
as someone who has been doing genealogy research for my family, women should hyphen their name. it has been difficult to find much on the women in my family because their last name was changed in marriage. their identity is erased. we should all care less about a man’s legacy.

There’s a long-standing, often unspoken rule about how women are expected to carry success. Society tends to reward women for being modest, agreeable, and self-effacing, not openly proud or self-assured. When a woman owns her achievements without apology especially in male-dominated or competitive spaces, it unsettles people who are used to seeing women shrink themselves to appear “likable.” Now add bigotry to the mix.
