During the Umayyad period, when the caliphs were concerned about frequent rebellions, such hadith would have helped them suppress opposition. clearly political influence also have affected some hadith

Also, the Quran started being preserved during the caliphate, whereas hadith started being collected about 100 years after the Prophet, at a time when there were huge divisions among Muslims...
