Hello, I’m Sergei Smirnov, editor-in-chief of Mediazona. We’re turning 10 this week. We started with the premise that in Russia, there’s no politics—only courts. Sadly, we were right.
For a decade, we’ve documented repression, meticulously collecting information on human rights abuses and closely following political trials. We let court transcripts and case files speak for themselves. We pioneered crowdfunding among independent Russian media, allowing us to survive and grow thanks to reader support.
By February 2022, we had over 10,000 monthly donors. Then, Visa and Mastercard left Russia, and new repressive laws stripped us of this support. We stayed quiet about it due to war—it didn’t feel right to ask.
Now, without reader support, Mediazona simply can’t continue. If we don’t rebuild our subscriber base, we face difficult decisions in 2025—significant cuts or closure. Given the risk of domestic donations becoming illegal, we urgently need international supporters. Our goal is 5,000 subscribers to stabilize our finances for 2025. With 10,000, we could thrive.
Help keep Mediazona alive. We’ll continue our live court coverage, data investigations, in-depth articles, and clickbait-free news.

Mediazona turns 10. We need your help to survive
A decade ago, in September 2014, we launched Mediazona—a small outlet dedicated to reporting on the Russian state’s abusive relationship with its people. For ten years, we’ve diligently documented the changes, even as we felt powerless to halt them. We used to say we longed for the day when Mediazona would have nothing left to report—when we could close our doors, our mission complete.
It’s now September 2024, and we still have plenty to write about. Yet today, we face closure not due to a lack of stories, but a lack of funds. We’re uncertain if we’ll see 2026.
The invasion of Ukraine devastated our funding. When Visa and Mastercard exited Russia, our donations plummeted. To survive, Mediazona needs 5,000 regular donating readers. To thrive and expand our coverage, we need 10,000 supporters.
We desperately want to continue our mission. So we ask: please help save Mediazona.
