@elitethedev Insightful, I got a new perspective on somethings reading this, its refreshing to hear from someone who isn't all gloom or pretending like everything is fine either. I might not agree with everything but I appreciate your perspective
AI and Design in about 400 words or so.
I was working on a trifold a while ago. you know the trifold yeah? this flyer you fold in 3 ways.
I've had quite some experience in printing and one thing about ink is; when not laminated, it breaks on fold.
You know what lamination is yeah? That process where you cover paper with a nylon-like material with or without heat so it doesn't get affected by water, friction and in some cases, fire.
You can as well laminate the trifold, but thats even worse cos laminated stuff don't fold easily, which defeats the aim entirely.
So what I, and some others designers would do is; leave some white space on the part that would carry the fold. This makes the trifold at least 20x more durable and looks better overall.
The only way an agent or intelligence system can know of this problem is if someone has complained about this on reddit or some other documented knowledge base.
AI usually knows documented knowledge. Designers often rely on undocumented experiences.
So prompting a trifold design simply means one thing. It would break on print.
What's my point exactly?
AI is here to take away the implementation part of the work, but thats only but one part of the work.
Implementing design is only the consequence of the thinking that has gone into it.
AI is here to expose you if all have been doing is to be a muscle. You are like the menial laborers that freeze at the sight of a tractor.
A tractor knows how to do its job pretty well. No human comes close, but tractor's don't own farms.
Bringing code in the mix....
AI is really good at coding because coding is how we speak to computers. thats like trying to beat the agent in its own mother tongue.
design, on the other hand is not so clear cut.
Look back at history and see how design has evolved, i'm not 30 yet and i've seen various design periods come and go.
Why do you think that is?
Design represents culture. per time.
When i write code, i want the computer to relate to me. When i design a brand, i want humans to relate to me.
An agent, just like other agents would obviously be good in relaying information in the level of resolution it lives and breathes by.
But relaying information that pertains to humans and evoking certain emotions at will is an entirely different ball game.
Many of you confuse "making" with "designing".
Designing excels beyond the ability to make something exist.
Designers make things useful, they make already-useful things feel good-to-use, and they make already-feel-good-to-use stuff, feel even better still.
There is no benchmark for taste of what good design should look or be like, we exist to always raise that bar.
AI is here to raise the bar for us, even faster. Its not a war, it's an evolution.
AI can generate artifacts. Designers still generate the judgment.
Una @PHCNnigeria took light when I was trying to meet up with deliverables and refused to restore the power for hours.
Connected my mouse to my phone so I will use figma web on it.
It’s not me that this country will limit.😂💔
In my opinion, the best products shouldn’t exist. At least, not in the user’s mind. A truly great product is so good at solving a problem that people use it's like oxygen, essential but invisible.
