@solidangles I see your point. It does indeed seem easier to do in your head, even if it takes more steps than 'traditional' right-to-left subtraction.
@solidangles Fair enough. But it seems the technique doesn't really work if the second number is smaller but each of its digits are larger. E.g.

- 1234
And now you have to go from right to left
