Up next is Chato who is a Law enforcement pillar in the KC community & school board member for @GCISchools. We’ll chat on lack of Latino representation on boards even though the Latino student population is the fastest growing.

My role right now is to reverse the normalization of violence, lack of quality resources & representation for marginalized communities. Changing the narrative & promoting healing in K-12 spaces. The road is long&arduous, but I’m here—as a wounded healer. ❤️🩹 #keynote#sofiaspeaks
No one really has the power to discourage you but you yourself. My biggest blockers right now are limiting beliefs, imposter syndrome, and fear…and yet they will be silenced & will need to evacuate the premises. We got this, and we can do hard things.
Grateful to have recently graduated as a nonprofit leader w/ @seedspot accelerator program, which inspired this blog. Gracias @seedspot for giving me the agency&confidence again to rebuild @_project214 w/the team and with a bright future in mind.

There are 12X as Many Latino Students as Latino Teachers in PA
That's right - while 12% of students in PA are Latino, only 1% of the teacher workforce serve as 'mirrors and windows' to reflect their background, serve as role models, and share lived experience as Latinos (https://t.co/4RdbBDsa4C).
Though this recent statistic (2021 data) is striking, Latinos are consistently the most underrepresented group in the educator workforce - nationally, 28% of students are Latino vs. just 9% of teachers (https://t.co/lveDDjYCal).
Why does this matter, you ask? There is a mountain of evidence of the positive effects, and academic and life outcomes, when Latino students have teachers who understand and reflect their background (there are 131 references in this recent article alone: https://t.co/yznj7MBUZT).
We're grateful to the Pennsylvania Latino Convention for the invitation to join a powerful panel at next month's convention in Harrisburg, to discuss approaches that we and others have demonstrated are effective in helping build a more welcoming, robust, and sustainable teacher talent pipeline, for the untapped potential in communities across the U.S.
Shout out to the Pennsylvania Educator Diversity Consortium for your great work, and to the PA Latino Convention for your leadership.

Read this week's full response from Sofia Gonzalez M.Ed., MA, adding to guest contributor Elise Lenthe's article in our eNewsletter last week, and Sofia's teaser: "It goes without saying that the diverse teacher pipeline is still leaky. Matter of fact, the drip is causing a puddle, and that puddle will soon evolve into a pool swiftly and without reservation. Research and data points - in conjunction with best practices to suggest a sturdier pipeline - are crucial to stop the leak that addresses the how. Yet, it is dire to elevate teacher voice and wipe the mirror that has fogged, so that teachers of color can continue to be 'mirrors and windows' to reflect their students' backgrounds and inspire their dreams and aspirations. So as a Latina educator of color, let me remind us of what teachers in the trenches truly need, and how Edifying Teachers lays the foundation that leans into these needs with heart, integrity, and equity as its modus operandi."

I only know how to speak in a way where it embodies my rawest& most genuine thoughts. Dropped this 💎 in KC last week during my keynote: “For all my non-communities of color, we don’t need Allies anymore, we need Co-Conspirators.” #sofiaspeaks
So elated to share I’m the next FT School Ambassador Fellow w/the US Dept of Education @usedgov . As the only Latina educator Chicago-born, it’s my honor! Blog 📢: https://t.co/HIikLs3VMc #RepresentationMatters
