To be honest, I'm surprised it seems there are no other references to this dialectical "conversation" between Kaufman and Eisenstein, or -probably- at least in the West, where the two texts have been read separately.

N. Kaufman argued that Japan 'had no real cinema'. Then Eisenstein offered the counter-argument 'Japan is nothing but cinema' by finding film montage buried in it's ancient culture.

Why have we read Eisenstein's Beyond the Shot in the wrong way?
