How many years it was Lithuania?
Credit: reddit user Key_Neighborhood_542 who explains:
"Lithuanian borders were first mentioned in 1009 but there they were not defined, so I start counting from 1235 when we have a proof that Lithuania was already united under King Mindaugas and have idea what territories were controlled by him.
I counted years when Lithuania was an independent country or in the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth. I excluded years of occupation by Russian empire, German empire, also the first Soviet, Nazi and second Soviet occupations, which lasted until 1991.
Curonia (8) was part of the Commowealth much longer but only for 8 years it was incorporated directly in Lithuania. The lighter area (531) in the North/West represents South Curonia and South Semigalia which were not part of the original Mindaugas' Kingdom and were conquered and assimilated decades later.
Kyiv (235) and Polesie (322) were lost not in war to Muscovy but to Poland in Lublin Union negociations.
Vilnius (596) was claimed but not controlled in the period between WWI and WWII (22), including 18 years of Polish occupation.
Trivia:
-It looks like Lithuania controlled the Black Sea port Hacibey (now Odessa 70) longer than our present Baltic Sea port Klaipėda (Memel 53). Of course we cannot even compare the level of control and its economic importance.
-Lithuania ruled Russian city Smolensk (172) longer than the Crimean peninsula was ruled by the Russian Empire or Federation."
