@ItsMaddiehbu@WaterBoy1069@ByMikeBaker A good guy with a shotgun did go in and kill the shooter. Prior to that, were the good guys with guns behind the armed police officers tasing and handcuffing parents who wanted to go into the school to get their kids? It does break down the "police will protect us" argument!
@go8ose@CrashPhoenix666@WaterBoy1069@ByMikeBaker It seems particularly tyrannical to be able to draft 18 year olds to fight in a war, but then not allow them to vote (as proposed by the above), or own guns or drink alcohol.
@Smitty1914@dumasroxx @JDSecord @MarinaMedvin He didn't buy an assault rifle. He had to fill out an ATF-4473 and undergo an NICS background check. If he said yes to "Have you ever been adjudicated as a mental defective OR have you ever been committed to a mental institution?" or failed the check the sale would not happen.
@GrowASpine2020 @darren_glo@MarinaMedvin I would at least change the following: 1) hardening the school (including not propping the door open) 2) having a police force that engages active shooters
@CraxyD @SpiderPigNY @James_Manolo @GrowASpine2020 @MarinaMedvin A "quibbling" technicality that doesn't change your point, but couldn't a res of IL buy a gun from IN dealer, the IN FFL dealer would have to mail it to to an FFL dealer in IL. Buyer would have to fill out an ATF-4473 and get background checked. They'd also have to have a FOID.
@paleo_lolbert @mtbfrick@beinlibertarian Cops are people. Some do the right thing and some don't and sometimes that is the same person on a given day. I personally don't want to live in a society without some security force.
@viper_norm@unitedweare23@beinlibertarian Unless he said "yes" to the form 4473 question "Have you ever been adjudicated as a mental defective OR have you ever been committed to a mental institution?" or the ATF found out that he was, I don't think he would be flagged as a "sick puppy" to stop the purchase.
@SatyrrrT@unitedweare23@beinlibertarian I don't know if the ATF background check that is already required for an FFL-licensed dealer to sell guns to this guy would have picked up that he was a crazed lunatic, but a secure school and responsive police force probably would have.
@lextune@unitedweare23@beinlibertarian I agree with this. That is one reason why I don't think the "What weapon of war was used in this attack?" question (and implied argument) is good. 1) A semi-auto AR-15 is essentially the same as some "weapons of war" set to semi-auto. 2) The 2a should protect weapons of war
@skept95734990@beinlibertarian There are a lot of details that are changing and I'm not aware of. Having said that, while they would be outgunned if they didn't have AR-15s (they did), they would still outnumber the shooter and I still think they should have engaged the shooter with their sidearms.
@king_lion_papi @beinlibertarian@NRA@GOP Well, the police were stopping parents from going into protect their kids. So it actually destroys the "police will protect us" myth.
@SatyrrrT@the_other_tbk@beinlibertarian I wouldn't require it. I wouldn't want a teacher who doesn't want to carry a gun, carrying a gun. I would hope a decent number of teachers would want to own and gun and get trained up to use it safely effectively.
@asmengel@beinlibertarian When you declare "war" on crime you start acting like warriors. Although in this case I use acting in the sense of playing dress up since they didn't do what they needed to do when they needed to do it.
@guns_ny thank you for educating me. I'm definitely a little embarrassed because I've read Black Hawk Down some 3 times and I always just assumed the CAR-15 was a Colt AR-15 (which I could argue is kinda true), but I didn't know it stands for Colt Automatic Rifle.
