The environment is not right for human flourishing and the overwhelming majority of people have no say in that. Ortho's take might've been salvageable if he wasn't pro-aristocracy. "The best of us" guided this mess in the first place
Just as an example, social media is engineered by the ~smartest people in the world to "optimize for engagement" AKA encourage behavioral addiction. It's the socio-technology equivalent of a hot chick rubbing your dick through your pants, GL with that responsibility and control
@adastroworld@GlenntheGolden1@corsaren@RafaRuizdeLira they'll definitely do it if you solicit it but each model will also just do it unprompted to varying extents based on how they were RLHF'd. Every version of Claude I've tried does this and GPT-4o was egregiously bad about it
@DJ84@adastroworld obviously not all politicians have motives that are pure of heart but good luck figuring out exactly who is who for yourself let alone convincing others.
@DJ84@adastroworld sorry but you're objectively wrong. under the right circumstances we are already happy to say that motive exonerates blame. it's why premeditation matters for murder charges, it's why we accept self-defense conceptually.
@DJ84@adastroworld no, they don't, and that's the actual crux of the problem. voters and politicians can make the game of political chicken as high-stakes as they're willing to stomach including abandoning any principles or sense of morality. thats what MAGA and dark woke are fundamentally speaking
@maybevafangul@uncledoomer I'm sure there are plenty of old men out there who are able to beat your ass, only difference between you and the zoomer is you'd fold like a lawn chair before they had a reason to
@Lib_Development The logic of this argument works against itself insofar as the solution is to preempt the issue by banning lab grown meat. It's the exact same freedom limiting behavior, the only difference is that they're already banning lab grown meat while your argument remains hypothetical
@BarneyFlames The fact that this trend is not true for the workforce broadly combined with men's gendered norms would imply these were people who had no business working in a great society
@stanfordNYC This is not an indictment of the people participating in those scenes broadly but it sure looks like a massive cultural blindspot that enables pests to hide out and that ought not be swept under the rug just because most participants are well intentioned
@stanfordNYC Sorry but tpot norms of engagement (and I assume rationalist norms broadly) are extreme enablers of missing stairs. How long was chaosprime tolerated by people who surely knew about his child sexual assault conviction? How was mimi treated for outing it publicly?
@_JackPBrown At least for me that's where the objection to lived experience comes from. It's not that lived experience is a bad guide in principle, it's a problem in practice when people use it to forego any kind of analysis
@_JackPBrown Likewise with the feminist and anti-racist movements. The epistemic standpoint of the oppressed uniquely positions them to have insight into their oppression because they don't have the option to turn away from it. But that experience needs to be grounded in some form of analysis
@memeticsisyphus Deep red America gave rise to the largest worker owned business in the world almost 100 years ago. Whatever impressions you had about the ubiquity of conservative belief were ignorant from the onset. The only thing that changed is the skin-deep signifiers.
@LinkofSunshine iirc the last time I looked at cost of living stats against income separated by quintile the bottom ~60% of consumers were worse off than before which is totally lost in the population average statistics because the top 40% were benefiting from the economy immensely
@LinkofSunshine these metrics don't work together to explain consumer sentiment because income/wealth is not an even distribution. over-exaggeration the stock market could be up 1000% and it would not matter if 99% of people are not invested in it
@samlowen5105@animalologist If there's one thing I know about love it's that you uncritically enable every decision your loved-ones make regardless of how self-destructive you think they are
@GenHeres123@Benthamsbulldog Most people would call the random inheritance of fortuitous circumstances "luck", you're the one that denied the premise of luck and that's why I bring up deserving instead
