James Wong Howe on how the ending of 'On the Waterfront' (1954) was filmed:

"[I worked with Kazan] in 'On the Waterfront' (1954). Kazan said, “You know I got an ending to this picture, where Brando is fighting. I need more shots of fighting. Would you do that for me?” I said, “Yes.” The production manager asked me how many lights I wanted. I said, “No lights.” So we went down and shot, and it got later and later and it was getting darker and darker.

Finally, I said, “Gee, Gadge [Kazan’s nickname], this is about it.” He said, “I need a shot of Brando. He’s been beaten up so he’s dizzy and he’s walking into the warehouse. The door opens there.” We used a handheld camera. It was an Eyemo that I gave to the operator. I put a piece of chalk down on the cement and said, “Now look through that camera and walk around that chalk mark.” He kept walking and walking, and said, “Gee, I’m getting a little dizzy.” I said, “Keep walking. Keep walking. Okay. Now point the camera at that door and hit the trigger and walk.” He couldn’t walk very steady, so it made a wonderful shot from Brando’s perspective. If I hadn’t spun the operator around and got him really dizzy, it wouldn’t have worked."
