I’m not trying to gatekeep or advocate for players running Pantheon for the first time when they don’t know the encounters. I’m not. But I will say this:
Pantheon is *not* a raid. It is a raid boss gauntlet. It is a curated list of raid bosses from different raids that share very few—if any—mechanics.
The biggest difference is that in a raid, from start through the final boss, pieces of mechanics are introduced in stages through the linear progression of encounters. In most cases, you learn the basics of what’s required before getting into the more difficult fights. In Pantheon, you are thrown right into the more difficult fights without having a basic concept of the previously introduced mechanics. There are more moving pieces to understand and learn with the designed assumption that you are already familiar with some of the pieces.
Take Atraks and Caretaker for example. Both are second encounters in their respective raids, Deep Stone Crypt and Vow of the Disciple.
In the first encounter of DSC, you learn the augment buff mechanic that is then required through the rest of the raid, including Atraks. You learn it in an environment that is relatively slower moving and better suited for understanding the prompts and activations.
With VotD, the first encounter teaches you about the symbols, how they interact with the obelisk, and how you open and close the doors. Yes, the first encounter requires speed like Caretaker, but it allows the freedom to learn the mechanics as a team without having to deal with a boss sequence. In Caretaker—a boss—these elements are all essential mechanics to know immediately for a crucial role, giving very little time to teach half of the encounter.
My point is this… while I definitely thinking it’s worth running Pantheon if you’ve never raided, realize going in that you are asking your teammates to teach you *necessary mechanics* the encounter *already* assumes you know by design. It’s a lot, especially under leveled. And it’s a lot to ask of teammates who may not have the experience or skills to realistically and effectively teach. If anything at all, even if you don’t know or haven’t run the encounter before, going in with a general sense of what the mechanical pieces are will make a world of difference and enhance the experience for both you AND your team.
