Ah yes, the fantasy of “Western Azerbaijan” continues where every Persian dome or caravanserai becomes proof of an invented Azerbaijani antiquity, and Yerevan is rebranded “Iravan” as if hashtags can rewrite history.
1. Yerevan’s foundation predates Azerbaijan by over two millennia.
The city of Yerevan was founded in 782 BCE as Erebuni by King Argishti I of Urartu. The cuneiform inscription from the fortress still stands in modern Yerevan undeniably Armenian in origin, centuries before Turkic tribes arrived in the Caucasus. Azerbaijan as a nation-state didn’t exist until 1918, and the ethnonym “Azerbaijani” wasn’t even in use before the 20th century Soviet classification schemes.
2. The so-called “Azerbaijani heritage” in Yerevan is Persian imperial, not so called ethnic Azerbaijani.
Structures like the Sardar Palace or mosques in Yerevan were built under Persian Qajar rule, not by any autonomous Azerbaijani culture. The Qajars were a Turkic-speaking Persian dynasty calling their architecture “Azerbaijani” is like claiming the Taj Mahal is Pakistani. You’re confusing imperial presence with ethnic ownership.
3. The 1828 Treaty of Turkmenchay ended Muslim political dominance in the region because it was Persian, NOT Azerbaijani.
Following the Russo-Persian War, the Treaty of Turkmenchay formalized Eastern Armenia’s annexation by the Russian Empire, not from an Azerbaijani state, but from Persia. No such thing as “Western Azerbaijan” existed it’s a modern geopolitical fiction, not a historical entity.
4. Armenian demographic dominance is well-documented.
Even before Russian rule, Armenians were the majority in Yerevan, and by the Russian Imperial Census of 1897, they were over 58% in the Yerevan uezd, growing further after centuries of persecution and displacement. Turkic-speaking Muslims (some of whom would later be classified as “Azerbaijani”) were a minority and often newcomers under Persian patronage.
5. The image in your post is Orientalist art, not history.
What you’ve shown is a 19th-century European fantasy painting romanticised, imagined, and curated for Western exoticism. You’ll find no accurate geography or ethnography in it. You want a real image? Look at the Katoghike Church 12th-century Armenian, still standing in central Yerevan today.
6. Modern identity projection ≠ historical reality.
Claiming “Iravan” was Azerbaijani is like saying Istanbul’s Galata district makes the city Italian because of Genoese architecture. Cities under empires have layers but that doesn’t make every former resident’s descendant the rightful owner.
7. We get the emotional narrative but facts don’t bend to feelings.
Yes, Yerevan has seen migration, wars, and tragedy. But that doesn’t entitle one side to fabricate revisionist myths of ownership over a city founded by Armenians, named in Urartian script, and culturally shaped by an unbroken Armenian presence.
#Yerevan was never “Azerbaijani.” It was Armenian Millenia before the word “Azerbaijani” even existed.
Let’s keep mourning colonial losses where appropriate but don’t turn Persian imperial nostalgia into a nation-building fairytale.
