Maya Angelou with her husband, South African anti-apartheid activist Vusumzi Make, c 1961. They met in New York, married in Ghana, and moved to Cairo, Egypt. Their romance began around 1960 when Make was in New York petitioning the United Nations against apartheid. Smitten, Angelou packed up her life and moved to Cairo, Egypt, with her son Guy. While in Cairo, Make worked as a PAC representative, and Angelou became the editor of the English-language Arab Observer newspaper. However, the marriage was short-lived. Another societal behaviour we, as South Africans, ought to examine, interrogate and change as a matter of urgency is our collective disregard for the law. We cannot absolve ourselves by pointing fingers at outsiders who appear to have no regard for our laws. When it is us who have set the tone. We have normalised and enabled lawlessness in countless ways, both big and small, and in doing so we have created an environment in which others simply follow the rotten foundations we have already established.

This culture of contempt for the rule of law is among the principal drivers of the corruption that has become endemic in both the public and private sectors. We tend to look at corruption as a game only played by politicians through tenders, yet it is a game that begins when society collectively decides that the law is optional, that rules are for other people, and that compliance is negotiable.
We are therefore not only participants in lawlessness and corruption ; we are, too often, its enablers. Our outrage at corruption will remain selective and our efforts to defeat it will yield very little if we ourselves don’t change.

PS. For every corrupt foreign national, be they Portuguese, Greek, Chinese, European or African; there is a South African involved!
