AKBAYAN SLAMS SENATE COUP: DESPERATE, LAST-DITCH EFFORT TO SAVE SARA
Akbayan Party today strongly condemned the shameless leadership coup orchestrated in the Senate, calling it a desperate, last-ditch attempt to protect Vice President Sara Duterte from the impeachment proceedings now set to reach the chamber. As the House of Representatives prepares to vote to impeach Duterte and transmit the Articles of Impeachment, pro-Duterte senators scrambled to seize control of the Senate in an effort to derail, delay, or even sabotage its constitutional duty to convene as an impeachment court.
The level of desperation among the plotters is now impossible to ignore. Even Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, who has skipped Senate sessions for months and abandoned much of his legislative work amid threats of arrest from the International Criminal Court, suddenly showed up. This alone reveals how terrified Sara Duterte’s allies are of accountability finally catching up with her. What is unfolding is a full-blown operation to weaponize Senate leadership once again to shield a powerful political dynasty from constitutional judgment.
The reported installation of Alan Peter Cayetano as Senate President is especially despicable. The Filipino people did not clamor for his ascension as Senate President. What the public demands is simple and clear: a fair impeachment trial, the truth laid bare, and justice delivered without fear or favor. Any attempt by the Cayetano Senate leadership to refuse, obstruct, or indefinitely delay impeachment proceedings risks plunging the country into a constitutional crisis.
This will leave a permanent stain on the Senate as an institution. The Filipino people will remember this day. No leadership coup, political maneuver, or institutional sabotage will stop the growing public demand for impeachment and accountability. If the Senate refuses to fulfill its constitutional duty, the people themselves will intensify the pressure until justice is served and Sara Duterte is finally made to answer before the nation.
Having a lot on its plate, President Marcos Jr. just let ICI shut down instead of acting to certify as urgent our proposed ICAIC law, which would create a more independent, more fully equipped and empowered body to take over ICI.
Otherwise, it is becoming clearer by the day that the public is just being taken for a ride, na paasa lang ang administrasyon sa pangako ng seryosong imbestigasyon at paanu-anunsyo pang may mga big fish na makukulong sa biggest corruption scam in our history. Hay naku, to say that we're disappointed is an understatement.
Mahiya naman ang administrasyong ito.
