I dated this guy who kept saying he loved how “calm” I was. At first I thought it was a compliment. Until I realized what he meant. He didn’t love that I was calm, he loved that I wasn’t reacting to his nonsense.
This man would disappear for hours, come back like nothing happened, and if I asked questions he’d say “you’re starting drama.” If I expressed discomfort he’d hit me with “I thought you were different.” DIFFERENT?? Like I was supposed to be grateful he was disrespecting me softly.
One day he cancelled plans last minute because “something came up.” I said okay, no problem. I didn’t argue. I didn’t beg. I went out anyway. Dressed up, smelled nice, took myself on a solo date. When he later called and heard noise in the background, his voice changed.
“Where are you?”
I said, “Outside.”
He said, “Outside where?”
I said, “Somewhere you didn’t deserve an invite to.”
He got quiet. Then started acting emotional. Suddenly he missed me. Suddenly he wanted to see me. That’s when it clicked, men like that don’t want peace, they want control. They call it “calm” because “obedient” sounds bad.
