Two boys diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) endured mistreatment at a mental institution in Lebanon in 1982. While references to autism can be found in earlier psychological records, ASD was formally recognized by German scientist Hans Asperger during World War II. Asperger Syndrome, the term previously used to diagnose individuals with ASD, is no longer employed in the United States since 2013, although it remains in use in the United Kingdom. Nonetheless, individuals who received an Asperger Syndrome diagnosis prior to 2013 may still identify with this label.
ASD manifests differently in each individual, encompassing challenges in social interaction, sensory sensitivities, maintaining eye contact, engaging in repetitive behaviors, developing intense interests (commonly known as "special interests"), and encountering difficulties in motor skills and communication, among other symptoms. It is crucial to recognize that no two people with autism are exactly alike.
Autism often coexists with other conditions, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyspraxia, dyslexia, dyscalculia, depression, and generalized anxiety disorder. People with autism can exhibit exceptional intelligence, artistic or creative abilities, impressive memory, and heightened levels of empathy. Some theories suggest that autism emerged in humans approximately 100,000 years ago. Certain historians argue that autism has played a significant role in humanity's progress, as individuals with autism have exhibited exceptional traits throughout history, including their ability to exist outside of societal norms, excel in complex mathematics (contributing significantly to architecture), and demonstrate remarkable organizational skills.
It is essential to acknowledge that Hans Asperger, despite his contributions to understanding autism, should not be glorified, as he was complicit in sending numerous autistic children under his care to their deaths in gas chambers. Autistic individuals are extraordinary, resilient, and valuable members of our society.
