Our paper on brown #hyaena socio-ecology is out in
@MammRes The high-density enclosed population on
@OkonjimaNamibia consisted of 6 clans, with an average home range size of 37km² however, interclan overlap was similar to open systems @africat_namibia

@traceyssimmons I've never worked with mouse guts, but these are pretty bad, you definitely don't want any of the 'juice' on your bare hands, the smell just doesn't come out. Hyaenas love them though.
@AndreiSnyman A rubber lined box trap is also standard for us but this relaxed individual, a very open area and a cold winter day worked for this situation
@WalksWithRhinos Not yet, he was beaten to our box trap by a female needing a collar change and then a big male leopard. Hopefully next week we can dart him and take a better look
A beauytiful sighting of my absolute favourite brown #hyena, however the appearance of the nose is worrying; a potentially nasty growth occurring. He's next on the list for collar replacement so its a good chance for a physical exam and sample collection
@WalksWithRhinos I'm worried it's something about more sinister unfortunately, like some type of cancer. That's our vets first opinion on the photo :-)
The first episode of the Covid-Chronicles with @africat_namibia showing how Covid-19 is impacting not just the tourism industry but also conservation and research.
The teaser episode for @OkonjimaNamibia and @africat_namibia of the Covid-Chronicles. Excited to showcase our work to the world

How calm brown #hyenas can be in a trap, when the trap size is large - ours is 3 x 3 meters. Conveyor belt rubber used to stop any wire chewing which could cause dental damage. This animal was sedated for a collar change with @unam_na veterinary students
