It’s making me oddly excited 😆

On career transition and growth:

Two and a half years ago, I made one of the biggest career decisions of my life.
I moved from Product Management into Software Engineering.

Here is my story.

I had spent years thinking about products, users, problems, and what should be built.

Now I wanted to understand something different:
- How do I actually build the things I spend so much time thinking about?
- How do I actually write code to build products and softwares?

So I started learning to code.

I started with TypeScript, React, Node.js, REST APIs, and React Native.

Then I slowly went deeper into backend engineering, CI/CD, infrastructure, distributed systems, Go, and now Rust.

It has been a journey. An uncomfortable one, but also one filled with many blessings.

There were things I thought I understood until I had to build them myself.
There were bugs that took hours and days to fix.

I got a lot architectural decisions wrong.
There were things I overengineered.
There were things I underestimated.

And there were also moments where I looked at something I had built and thought:
Wow. I actually built this.

One of the biggest things I've built is Troott @thetroott , an audio streaming platform I have been building for ministers and churches.

Building Troott pushed me far beyond just writing UI.
I had to actually build the it end to end.

I had to think about audio processing, FFmpeg, HLS streaming, adaptive bitrates, storage, CDNs, authentication, mobile, web desktop applications, infrastructure, and everything that comes with trying to make a real product work end to end.

And I am still learning.

That is actually the part I want to share more about.

Not just the finished product.

I want to share my journey.
- The things I learned.
- The things I got right.
- The things I got completely wrong.
- The bugs.
- The architectural mistakes.
- The tradeoffs.
- The things that failed.
- The things that worked.
- And the things I still don't know.

Currently I am back to the fundamentals, and at same time going deep into distributed systems, data structures, algorithms, and system design.

Not because I want to collect technologies, but because I want to become a much better problem solver and engineer.

I don't consider myself a "cracked engineer".
I'm still becoming one.

And that's what I want to share here.

I'll be writing about what I've built, the parts I'm still building, what I'm learning, my mistakes, what breaks, what works, and what I'm figuring out along the way.

And hopefully, the things that can help someone else on their own journey.

Two and a half years into this transition, I still have a lot to learn,
and honestly, I'm so excited about that.

This is my journey from Product Management to becoming a cracked engineer.
Let's see where it goes.
