As you might imagine, I get asked a lot - A LOT - which course is my personal favorite.

This is the answer: Charles Blair Macdonald’s masterpiece at National Golf Links of America.

It’s been my favorite since the day I first saw it about a decade ago. And it will likely remain my favorite for all time.

Why? Just look at it. And if that’s not enough, it’s also the most fun place for a round of golf (with apologies to Cypress Point) that I can ever imagine playing.

Easy choice: Eastward Ho!

This 1922 Herbert Fowler design sits on a heaving finger of land carved and piled by ice age glaciers. Such dramatic land demands a dramatic course, and EHo delivers.

One of my favorite places anywhere. Until Eastward Ho is on every top 50 list everywhere, I will continue to call it underrated.

Seth Raynor didn’t play golf. He was working as a Southampton land surveyor and engineer in 1907, when Charles Blair Macdonald hired him to survey and plot the land of what Macdonald intended to be the country’s greatest course: the National Golf Links of America.

Somehow, the two men combined to create what now, 116 years later, remains one of the finest golf courses in the world. Macdonald’s decision to hire Raynor would change the path of golf course architecture the U.S., as Macdonald never built another course without him, and Raynor would use what he learned from Macdonald during a decade-long solo career to build dozens of courses that still draw highest praise today.
