“How to get Canada Physiotherapy Licensure as a Nigerian Trained PT”
Thinking of working as a physiotherapist in Canada? Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to get licensed, covering credentialing, exams, costs, and alternative pathways. 🧵👇
Before we dive in, it is important to note that this pathway is highly rewarding albeit requiring high cost, patience and strategic planning.
⸻
1️⃣ Credentialing with CAPR
Before taking any exams, you must prove your education & training meet Canadian standards. This is done through the Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators (CAPR).
🔹 What happens?
CAPR reviews your academic & professional credentials to ensure you’re eligible for the licensing exams.
The assessment checks that your education and qualifications are not substantially different from that of a Canadian-educated physiotherapist and the following five criteria have to be met:
Criterion 1 - Identification: Verification of qualifications and credentials through authentic and valid documentation
Criterion 2 - University level, entry-to-practice degree in physiotherapy: Completion of a university level, entry-to-practice degree (or credential by another name) in physiotherapy, awarded by a recognized institution authorized to issue credentials equivalent to a degree in Canada.
Criterion 3 - Supervised clinical practice: Successful completion of at least 1025 hours supervised clinical practice.
These hours must include at least:
•100 hours in musculoskeletal conditions
•100 hours in neurological conditions
•40 hours in cardiorespiratory conditions.
This is sometimes called supervised clinical practice, or clinical internship, or clinical placement or practicum.
Criterion 4 - Language proficiency: Fluency in English or French as set out in CAPR Language Proficiency Policy.
Criterion 5 - Knowledge of the practice of physiotherapy within the Canadian healthcare system: Evidence that the applicant has education that reflects the need for autonomous, safe, effective, and ethical physiotherapy practice within the Canadian health context.
On successful completion of these criteria, you would be allowed to make a first attempt of the PCE (Physiotherapy Competency Examination) within 2 years.
🔹 How long?
Takes 6-9 months, but can be longer if documents are incomplete.
🔹 Required Documents:
✅ Personal Identification Document (Passport, Birth Certificate) (Criterion 1)
✅ Document Request Form (to be filled by you and your department head) and stamped. (hard copy) (satisfies Criterion 1,3)
✅ Official Transcripts sent directly from your university to CAPR (hard copy) (Criterion 2)
✅ Course Syllabus/Curriculum (must be detailed & university-stamped) (optional)
