11 money mistakes not to make in 2024

Number 5 is a big one⬇️

1. Saving too much

Emergency funds are very important but after you have cash for 3-6 months to even a years worth of fixed expenses

You should most likely be investing the rest.

2. Prioritizing your kid's education over your freedom

I see too many parents putting their kids first here

Create more options for yourself first.

Most likely they can get a loan for college but you can't get a loan to retire

So just like a plane put your oxygen mask on first.

3. Neglecting insurance.

Insure your income with disability insurance. Most people don't realize it's highly likely you could have a long-term disability happen during your working years.

Life insurance to protect those you leave behind

Or create a pool of money for long-term care

4. Spending Too Much on Your House

Buy the home you can afford today

Don't hope for rate declines or prices decreases

If you can refinance down the road great. Just make sure you can live a good life now and still invest for future options

Not just live for your house.

5. Not talking about money when you're planning to get married.

Just talking about money is 🔑 for any relationship over the years.

Especially before you get together though.

Set common goals

Find common ground

Then have monthly or quarterly reviews so you stay on the same page with each other.

6. Spending too much money on the wedding.

The key here is too much.

If you can spend $50k and it's a drop in the bucket then big deal enjoy yourself.

If you're taking out a loan for a 6 hour party you're probably putting yourself in a bad situation when you don't need to.

7. Overspending on cars.

I get it if you really like cars and you have the money then get that car you love as long as it doesn't affect the rest of your finances and ability to create options.

But big payments affect cash flow (Budget) and expensive cars are expensive to maintain.

Don't let a car hold your life back.

8. Taking a job for the money.

One of the worst decisions to make in business is to make decisions based on emotion

Another one is just for the money

Don't neglect quality of life, free time, stress vs. no stress, freedom.

It's worth looking at all the angles.

9. Assuming you'll have more money in the future.

Life happens and it doesn't always go according to plan.

Plan to succeed on what you have.

But don't assume it will always be there.

Build more freedom and options into your life today and if you do make more then you just have more options down the road.

10. Allowing lifestyle inflation to occur

Income goes up and often expenses with it

Live with intension so this doesn't happen

I've seen people make a million dollars and have nothing to show for it.

11. Not making a plan

Can't hit a target that's not set up right?

Know your cash flow numbers

Review taxes not only this year but how they look in the future.

Have an estate plan so that you have people who can advocate for you while you're alive if you can't do it yourself

Or leave a legacy for those you care about most

Make sure insurance is set up especially if you have a business, small kids, a spouse or debt that you might leave behind

Investing to create more options to do more of what you love and less of what you hate.
