He was the number one high school basketball player in America in his class.

In November of last year, he gave that ranking up on purpose. Nobody asked him to.
​
To understand it you have to go back several years.
​
A kid from Gilbert, Arizona walks into Perry High School and proceeds to win everything available to him.
​
Back-to-back 6A state championships. A 27-2 season as a sophomore, closing the year ranked fourth nationally.
​
There was nothing left in his home state to prove, so he left it.
​
He crossed the country to Prolific Prep in Fort Lauderdale, away from his family, to be coached harder.
​
It worked. He averaged eighteen points, ten rebounds, four assists and two blocks a game there.
​
By the fall he was ranked number one in the entire class of 2027, with a full year still in front of him.
​
Then he reclassified. He moved up into 2026, and dropped from first in his class to sixth.
​
He traded the top ranking in the country for a harder room, a year early, against older and stronger players.
​
Then came the second decision, and it was the harder of the two by a distance.
​
He chose the program whose previous freshman had just been taken first overall in the NBA draft.
​
He walked straight into that comparison instead of around it.
​
Kansas wanted him. Kentucky, Louisville, Arizona, Houston, Miami and USC all wanted him.
​
In March he started for Team East at the McDonald's All-American Game in Glendale, back in his home state and the youngest player on the floor.
​
Six foot seven, with a seven-foot-one wingspan and a frame that has barely begun to fill out.
​
He does not turn eighteen years old until late October — in the middle of his freshman season.
​
His name is Bruce Branch III.
​
Only one signee in BYU history has ever been rated higher than he is. He chose to follow that man rather than avoid him.
​
Every single step this young man has taken has been toward the harder version of whatever came next.
​
That is not a ranking. That is a character trait, and it is the one that actually survives contact with college basketball.
​
