the fact of the matter is, “coming out” is never a one-time event. we’re constantly coming out. everyday. it’s neverending! and don’t even get me started on the folks who’ve realized they were trans, or gender-nonconforming, years after “coming out” as non-straight!

coming out” is often framed as “liberatory” and “progress.” as if it’s the last thing one must do prior to being able to reach individual freedom. when in actuality, and more commonly, “coming out” often subjects us to more surveillance, ostracism, and patriarchal violence.

also, this isn’t even to say that one shouldn’t come out—or that it’s problematic to? we live under this cisheteropatriarchal order, and we gotta navigate it however we can.

i just want folks to know you aren’t obligated to—despite mainstream “gay rights” narratives & pressures.

“coming out”—especially in the terrain of neoliberalism, which individualized, commodified, and turned the concept into an industt; an exemplary of liberal “progress”—further naturalizes the regime of heterosexuality, and we should build a world beyond its confines & violences❤️
