I've said this before but I'll say it again. A significant part of the people who fail to teach their children Igbo if you look at it well, are products of a lower class who newly became middle to upper class. They see being "global" as a badge of honor and being "Igbo" as a reminder of previous status.

For them, it is aspirational to learn French in 2026, and not Igbo.

There is really nothing you can do to change their minds. The cultural low self esteem is too deeply ingrained.

Second hand embarrassment aside, you just need to challenge them so people don't join their folly.

Speaking the language of your own historical culture in 2026 is one of the highest octane ways to retain cultural authenticity even in this AI age.

Crazy thing is i have argued this with my own father a thousand times, they are always pissed my kids speak French and English but not igbo and my response is simple:

The world is progressing but Nigeria regresses on a daily, most people are running away from the country and 10 out of 10 times they will not use Igbo for anything in a white man’s land, speaking French and English or any globally recognised language will open far better doors for your kids than igbo or Yoruba will unless they have plans to become Igbo or Yoruba movies actors or artistry.

Now it doesn’t mean if i have the opportunity to teach them igbo i wouldn’t but i will prioritise a language that will help their lives in adulthood than anything else.

Language as a means of transacting with the world, or as a mechanism for global exchange is basically converging on English and Mandarin for everyone in the world, tbh. Even French speakers find that they cannot help the world's inexorable move to English.

Where your children need Igbo is because language primarily functions as a way of transmitting identity, culture and a world view.

If your children don't speak Igbo, they never get to understand their Igbo heritage, they never get to actually participate in their culture, and they will never pass it on.

They'll eventually become just another English or French speaking black person who has no unique connection to a culture that is not commoditized. They will blame you for failing in your responsibility.
