The Vatican clarifies: Mary is not "Co-Redemptrix"

"Mater Populi Fidelis" is the title of the Doctrinal Note published today - November 4th - by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith. Signed by Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández and approved by Pope Leo XIV on October 7th, it is the fruit of a long and detailed collegial effort. It is a doctrinal document on Marian devotion, centering on the figure of Mary, associated with Christ's work as the Mother of Believers.

THE TITLES OF MARY
In this positive framework, the Note (a specific type of official document or communication issued by a Dicastery (department) of the Roman Curia) analyses various Marian titles, emphasising some and warning against others. Titles such as Mother of Believers, Spiritual Mother, and Mother of the Faithful People are particularly highlighted. The title Co-Redemptrix, however, is considered inappropriate and improper.

WHY "CO-REDEMPTRIX" IS NOT APPROPRIATE
The Second Vatican Council had decided not to use this title "for dogmatic, pastoral, and ecumenical reasons." Cardinal Ratzinger explained that the formula "departs to too great an extent from the language of Scripture and of the Fathers and therefore gives rise to misunderstandings." The Note concludes: "It would not be appropriate to use the title 'Co-redemptrix' to define Mary's cooperation."

THE MEANING OF "MEDIATOR"
Scripture is clear: Christ is the only Mediator. The document recognises that Mary can only be called "mediatrix" in a
subordinate and participatory sense, as intercession and cooperation, never as a source of grace. "Mary's maternal role in no way obscures the unique mediation of Christ, but rather shows its power."

MOTHER OF THE FAITHFUL PEOPLE
The title of Mother of Believers allows us to speak of Mary's action in our life of grace. However - the Note specifies —
"no human person, not even Mary, can act as a universal dispenser of grace: only God gives grace through the humanity of Christ."
