Neha Bora raises a provocative question: what does “Brahminism” actually mean?

Her argument is not simply about an individual's caste identity. She points towards an ideology of social hierarchy in which women are denied independent agency and are expected to remain under the authority of men — first father, then husband and, ultimately, other male relatives.

COMMENTARY

There is an important distinction we must make.

Criticising Brahminism as a system of hierarchy is not the same as attacking Brahmins as human beings.

The real question is whether any social order should tell a woman that she cannot exist independently — that her identity, freedom and choices must always be controlled by a man.

If an ideology assigns different rights, dignity or freedom according to birth, gender or inherited status, it deserves to be questioned.

And this is precisely where the conversation about Manusmriti and Brahminical social hierarchy becomes relevant. Historically, critics of the caste order — most prominently Dr. B. R. Ambedkar — challenged systems that treated hierarchy as divinely or traditionally sanctioned.

But there is another equally important principle:

No community should be reduced to an ideology, and no individual should be judged merely by birth.

The fight against caste hierarchy must therefore be a fight for human equality, not against human beings.

A woman standing in a protest, speaking publicly and demanding rights is not violating some sacred social order.

She is exercising the very freedom that a democratic society is supposed to guarantee.

The question ultimately is simple:

Do we want a society where people inherit their place — or a society where every human being is free to determine their own place?

I choose the latter.

जबसे मोदी-शाह काँग्रेस के नेताओं को तोड़ कर भाजपा में शामिल करते थे तो गोदी मीडिया के दलाल एंकर, भाजपा व संघी उछलते रहते थे, और इसे मोदी का मास्टर स्ट्रोक तथा शाह को चाणक्य तक बताते रहे !

लेकिन राहुल सर ने इस वीडियो में जब अपनी बात कही तो लगा कि वो कितने दूरदर्शी हैं। उन्होंने मोदी जी के मास्टर स्ट्रोक और तथाकथित चाणक्य की धज्जियाँ उड़ा दी जब उनकी तुलना सफ़ाई कर्मी के समकक्ष कर दी !

राहुल जी ने हंसते हुए इस वीडियो में जो कहा, उसे सुन कर लगा कि शायद वो इसलिए सहज हैं, क्योंकि कहते हैं कि, काँग्रेस की जिस गंदगी को वो साफ़ नहीं कर सके वो सारी गंदगी मोदी-शाह ने करते हुए काँग्रेस की सफ़ाई कर दी !

A Jewish Democratic nominee for Congress stood with an interfaith crowd and said what India’s ruling ideology refuses to hear: Mohan Bhagwat’s organisation has fomented violence and hatred against Muslims, Sikhs, Dalits and Christians; and Madison Square Garden should not platform it.
