In his "Discourse on Inequality," Rousseau distinguishes between two forms of self-love.

There's amour de soi, which is a basic and natural form of self-love that we share with animals. This is the form of self-love that motivates you to find food when you're hungry and shelter when it's raining.

Then there's amour-propre, which Rousseau suggests arises when humans start living in society. Amour-propre is a comparative form of self-love, such as hinging your self-esteem on whether you have status and prestige in the group. Or whether people envy you or if they're doing better than you.

If you buy a watch because you love it — say, for its movement, design, and history — then this exhibits having personal taste. On the other hand, if you buy a watch because you want to impress others, this is an example of Rousseau's amour-propre.

Approaching watches (or menswear) through the framework of amour-propre can be very corrupting because these symbols are always changing. One day something is considered cool or prestigious; the next day it's not. If your style choices depend too heavily on external validation, you can also become narcissistic and perpetually unhappy, as these items don't actually confer the prestige you seek.

@ExtraBird2678 Alternatively, I got my blood work done recently and need vit D supplements, turns out. It's pretty common in Canada (vit D deficiency), could be worth checking that for yourself too (don't just go get supplements, vit D is fat soluble and toxic in high doses)
