On This Day — August 1, 1948

David Ben-Gurion made Israel’s position on the Arab refugees crystal clear.

Speaking while the war launched by five Arab armies to annihilate the Jewish state in the crib was still underway, he said the refugee question would be addressed as part of a full peace settlement. Any solution had to account for Jewish counter-claims for the destruction of Jewish life and property, the long-term interests of both populations, the stability of the new state, and the responsibility of the Arab governments for the war of aggression they had started.

Israel created a Custodian of Abandoned Property to protect empty homes and fields. It later offered family reunification, the release of frozen bank accounts, compensation for land, and the return of 100,000 refugees.

But the Arab states rejected every proposal. They refused any step that could be read as recognition of Israel.

Their own leaders explained why. Egyptian Foreign Minister Muhammad Salah al-Din stated that return meant the refugees coming back “as masters of the homeland … the liquidation of the State of Israel.”

A Lebanese newspaper wrote the demand for return was intended to create a powerful fifth column “for the day of revenge.”

Israel had already absorbed roughly 160,000 Arabs who stayed and became citizens. Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett called unrestricted return of those who fled “suicidal folly.”

The refugees stayed refugees because the Arab states preferred permanent grievance to any settlement that left a Jewish state standing.

Ben-Gurion’s words on August 1, 1948, were not the closing of a door.

They were an invitation to negotiate that was deliberately refused.

John Landis was offended by an article he read about Jewish comics in blackface at the time of making "Coming to America" (1988) & he thought it was really ignorant. So, he called Eddie Murphy & told him that he has to play the role of an old Jew in the movie. At first, Murphy couldn't believe it, but was willing to give it a go.

Nöam, a well-known Montréal kosher restaurant on Décarie Boulevard, was burned to the ground overnight. Nearby surveillance footage shows a man pouring accelerant and deliberately setting the restaurant on fire, according to reports from The Suburban. The owners are Shomer Shabbat and may not even be able to review the footage or fully absorb the destruction of their business until Shabbat ends.

The Jewish community of Montréal will stand together, support them and rebuild. In one way or another, Nöam will emerge from this stronger and more glorious than ever. Because this is what we do.

As for the motive, we already know the ritual that will follow. We will be instructed to remain calm, suspend judgment and wait patiently before calling a spade a spade.

But let us remember the context in which this occurred.

For nearly three years, Montréal’s Jewish schools, synagogues, community institutions and businesses have been threatened, vandalized, shot at and set on fire. Because “Free Palestine.” Because “From the river to the sea Palestine will be free.” Because Jew hatred has been excused, normalized and allowed to spread without meaningful consequence.

Each incident may require its own investigation. But the broader pattern does not cease to exist merely because every individual perpetrator has not left behind a written manifesto explaining his intentions.

There comes a point at which the demand for infinite proof stops functioning as legitimate caution and starts functioning as social permission to remain blind.

Whatever this investigation ultimately establishes, the owners of Nöam will not face this alone. The Jewish community of Montréal will rebuild, as we always do. But our resilience should never be mistaken for an obligation to remain silent about the conditions that made an attack like this ultimately foreseeable.

We will rebuild. But we will not remain silent.

For too long, the people of Venezuela have watched powerful people negotiate over their future while they pay the price.

If this reporting is accurate, Americans should ask one simple question: Who benefits? It certainly isn’t the Venezuelan people.

The Maduro regime has spent decades stealing elections, crushing dissent, imprisoning opponents, and exploiting Venezuela’s vast natural wealth while millions fled their homeland. Any policy that leaves the dictatorship stronger—economically or politically—while ordinary Venezuelans remain oppressed is the wrong policy.

The United States should never measure success by barrels of oil or diplomatic headlines. We should measure it by whether Venezuela is closer to free and fair elections, the release of political prisoners, an independent judiciary, and the restoration of democracy.

The Venezuelan people are not bargaining chips. They are our allies in the fight for liberty. America must stand with them—not with those who profit from their oppression.

It’s is heartbreaking to see so many people I know and love being terrorized by DHS and the Ron DeSantis admin in Florida.
