Footballer Borja Iglesias reacted to the forced eviction from her home of 87-year-old Maricarmen, who lives in Madrid:

“We cannot normalize real estate speculation leading to people being evicted from the homes where they built their lives. Housing cannot be treated solely as an investment. Let’s fight together.”

Maricarmen, who has a 50% disability, had been living in her home in Madrid’s Retiro neighborhood since 1956. The company that purchased the property increased her rent from €500 to €1,650 and rejected all negotiation proposals. Hundreds of people waiting to prevent the eviction were attacked by police, and numerous people were detained. Following the incident, tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Madrid to protest for the right to housing and against police violence.

A reminder that multiple academic studies - as well as international comparisons - show 100s of 1000s of Americans died from COVID who didn’t need to die had Trump taken it seriously from the beginning and been a minimally more competent president.
