Ian Cameron, chair of Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police, says Senzo Mchunu has received more than R3.16 million in remuneration while on special leave, while acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has received a further R3.02 million.

Cameron says the combined R6.19 million raises serious questions about policing priorities, noting that Mchunu’s remuneration alone is equivalent to the annual salaries of about 13 experienced Constable-ranked detectives.

He says the money could instead strengthen stretched Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences units, and is calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to explain how long Mchunu’s special leave will continue and what the end point is.
