Mateus Fernandes benched.

Spurs have a problem, and it’s a De Zerbi issue.

He seems to have a fundamental misunderstanding as to how to get the best out of the team HE built.

Tonali #6, Fernandes #8, Marmoush second-striker, Solanke #9.

It’s the ONLY way.

Anything else is wrong.

Tonali is better facing the play with the ball.

Fernandes is the most dynamic of the lot. He’s also more nimble and more mobile than Tonali over short distances so he’s better suited to go and hunt defensively. Tonali more robust physically and although he’s rapid when he gets going, he’s slow off the mark. That’s why he’s more suited to the #6 with Fernandes higher. Let Fernandes roam and Tonali patrol.

That dynamic makes the most sense with AND without the ball. We have to remember that Mateus is the real star in the midfield. Tonali is the one who has to learn to master the #6 role under De Zerbi. Fernandes is more of a ‘let him play’ type #8 because of how special and well-rounded he is. That’s not Tonali.

And then ahead of them you need a #10 who can take the ball into feet, otherwise you get a repeat of what happened with Richarlison against Brentford. Both Solanke and Marmoush work well together here.

De Zerbi is currently failing to give Spurs the best possible chance of winning.

Very concerning.

No doubt that the game today will be much more of a fight than it should be because of De Zerbi’s subpar selection. Forest are a proper team under Glasner.

It’s time to be very harsh on De Zerbi because this is HIS squad. He has been given the keys and quality is no longer an issue. It’s on him to get this team in and around the top 6 otherwise it’s a massive failure this season.
