In its core Minecraft is a colonialist game and I’m tired of pretending otherwise.
As the player, you extract natural resources from the land and transform it to suit your needs. Biomes act as development frontiers, with indigenous villages as trade outposts.
There’s an emphasis on tools and building a settlement with fellow colonists. The untamed environment is framed as inherently hostile and demands domestication through exclusionary perimeters and lighting.
As a game, Minecraft was fundamentally informed by Western colonial experiences, whereby settlers treated distant lands as peripheries ripe for extraction and colonization.
No other society apart from the West could have produced it.
