Lately, I’ve been reflecting on how much of what we hear in church is shaped more by the preacher than by the text itself. You sit there and notice it, so many “I’s,” so many personal stories, so many experiences. And while those things are not wrong in themselves, something begins to feel off when they become the center. It slowly shifts the focus from God’s Word to the preacher’s life, from what God has said to what someone has experienced. And that changes more than we think.

When preaching consistently starts with human ideas and only uses Scripture to support them, people may leave encouraged, emotional, even inspired, but not necessarily grounded. They may know more about the preacher’s journey than about the actual meaning of the text. Over time, this can produce a kind of spiritual growth that is shallow, strong in feelings, but weak in understanding. People may become dependent on powerful delivery rather than deep truth, and their faith can begin to rest on personalities instead of Scripture.

But when the Word itself is opened, explained, and allowed to speak, something different happens. People begin to see God more clearly, not just the preacher. They learn how to think biblically, not just react emotionally. Their growth becomes steadier, deeper, and more rooted, because it is anchored in what God has actually said, not just what someone feels or has experienced.

This is why it matters. Not because stories are bad, but because they must never replace the voice of Scripture. The preacher is not the message, the Word is. And when that order is restored, the church doesn’t just feel inspired, it grows.
