White-collar jobs, office jobs, tech jobs, the 9 to 5 life. That’s the dream for most Nigerians today. Everyone wants to look sharp in a tucked-in shirt and brown trousers, rushing off to the office every morning and counting down to Friday like it’s Christmas. But while we are all joining hallelujah challenge for these job, we seem to have forgotten one of the biggest blessings of this country, which is agriculture.
Agriculture is not just about holding a hoe or sweating under the sun. It is business, it is creativity, it is life itself. There is animal husbandry, where people raise goats, cattle, and chickens that feed entire families. There is fishery, for those who prefer the calm of the water. Crop production keeps our markets alive, forestry protects our land, horticulture adds beauty, and agro-processing turns cassava into garri and tomatoes into paste. That is money and food in one plate.
And here is the funny part. Even some of our favourite online influencers and “soft life” advocates have farms quietly running somewhere. Many of them have agriculture as their number one plan, or at least a solid backup plan. In fact, most of our politicians are into it too. They may wear suits on TV, but trust me, their real investments often grow from the soil.
Agriculture is not old-fashioned. It is the future we keep overlooking. The soil still pays, and it pays well.
