@toiletkingcap@alz_zyd_ Yep, that’s actually very important.
I use two sources of variation plausibly exogenous to fund flows and fees: local supply of data-analytics graduates (instrumenting adoption) and the release of TensorFlow as shock to how much information they can “learn” from data (sec. 4.3)
@humphilomath Yes, but not using traditional predictors like past performance, turnover, or fund fees.
Using @builtwith data on adoption of data-tools, these flows are indeed predictable —just for different reasons.
Thanks @alz_zyd_!
Understanding how data availability reshapes asset management—beyond its role in improving portfolio allocation—is key to thinking about the future of the industry.

What brings money into mutual funds? This interesting JMP by Marco Zanotti cleverly shows that funds - especially those focused on retail customers - do data analytics on their customers, and this seems to contribute to fund flows!
There's a lot of interest in "open banking", banks sharing data to 3rd-parties. Check out @RachelJNam 's paper on German open banking: if everyone can share data, who does so?
Interestingly, people who are good credit risks know they're good, and opt-in more to data sharing!
