Sometimes I wonder if we really need all that middleware, SQl-to-JSON-REST code at all. Could a web app just talk to postgres directly? why not ?

- manages data for you
- uses a simple language for data retrieval
- guarantees consistency at expense of speed
- hides data storage details from the user
