Title: Computational Approaches for Historical Linguistics
Abstract: Language evolves, adapts, and transforms alongside the communities that use it. Historical linguistics seeks to uncover the mechanisms behind this evolution by tracing the origins and trajectories of words, meanings, and structures over time. Today, advances in artificial intelligence, particularly generative models, are changing the way we study these processes. This talk will explore how AI-driven methods can help historical linguists study these changes on an unprecedented scale. We will discuss recent approaches to detecting and classifying different types of lexical semantic change, such as generalization, specialization, and auto-antonym shifts. We will also examine how large language models (LLMs) encode historical linguistic knowledge, as well as how these models can be evaluated and adapted to reason about historical texts. Finally, we will discuss applying generative AI to document and preserve endangered languages, especially those without written traditions.
