Handwriting keeps the brain awake. Every letter demands attention. Every word requires intention. That friction is the workout your mind needs but does not get from a keyboard. So make sure you write 10 minutes a day using pen and paper.
Your Gmail address follows you everywhere. Your bank, your Netflix, your Uber, half the apps on your phone. For 22 years, Google wouldn't let you change it.
Sundar Pichai just announced you can finally change it. If you're in the US, you can go into your account settings and swap to any available @ gmail dot com address. Your old one stays as a backup. Google said "can you change your Gmail address" was the most Googled "can you" Gmail question in the US last year.
The timing on this is kind of perfect. Gmail launched on April 1, 2004, exactly 22 years ago. Google chose April Fools' Day deliberately because they were promising free email with 500 times the storage of Hotmail. Nobody believed it. The thing ran on 300 old computers that nobody at the company wanted. Invitations were selling for $250 on eBay because you couldn't just sign up. It stayed in beta for five years.
I looked into why they never let you change your address, and the answer is pretty simple. Your Gmail stopped being just an email a long time ago. It became the thing that lets you log in to everything else on the internet. Whenever you tap "Sign in with Google" on a website or app, that's your Gmail doing the work. An Okta report found Google handles 75% of all those logins across the web. Your Gmail is connected to your Drive, YouTube, photos, saved passwords, and your phone. For 90% of US startups, it's the company email too. 1.8 billion people use it. The average person has 1.7 Gmail accounts.
Changing an address that's plugged into all of that without breaking stuff is a mess. Outlook, Yahoo, and iCloud still won't do it. The best they offer is aliases, which is basically a forwarding address taped to the front of your old mailbox. Google actually went and changed the mailbox itself.
Catches, though. You only get 3 changes ever. Once per year. Your old address remains as an alias, and you can't delete it. And it's US-only right now. Google has been quietly testing this since December, before announcing it today.
The logic behind the old system was simple: make it annoying to leave, and people won't. Every email provider did this. Google is betting the opposite. Let people update their accounts instead of ditching them and making a new one. The service that everyone thought was a joke 22 years ago has 1.8 billion users, and they're choosing to make the cage door a little wider instead of locking it tighter.
