The Phantom Menace changed visual effects, and filmmaking. So many techniques that we use daily in this profession were either little ideas or pipe dreams just before this. I’ll name a few, but this is an open #VFXarchaeology thread on methods pushed forward by this film.
Let's not forget that the filmmakers of Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One keep saying 'We filmed all for real!'. Just look below at the Oscar's VFX reel. Full CGI shots in Rome, full CGI shots in the airport, so much CG, VFX, it's just mindblowing 🤯. This film could have been presented as the perfect merging of practical and digital. They could have given credit to the VFX teams but no... it had to be presented as this 'bullshit' 'all real' nonsense. What a wasted opportunity! The amazing VFX teams working on this film deserved better!

Rainer Werner Fassbinder's cameraman DP Michael Ballhaus innovated a 360 degree tracking shot in 1974's Martha. Scorsese loved how Ballhaus' camera moved and employed him on in such films as Goodfellas and The Color of Money. The eye of the director owes much to his technicians.
