The question lures the quiet vulnerability of a lip quiver. It’s the first thing they notice of her besides the way she stumbles when pulled into the room, how her shoulders tremble like they’re propped up by straws, how the light reflects like glass in her unrested eyes.

That’s what she tells herself; a happy partner is always a more appealing sight than a distraught one. Though, she’s begun to unravel herself from that belief in small morning reminders that Amity would rather see her sad than not see her at all. It’s complicated.
