We should speak up about what we know to others about climate change. This is a serious subject and this is a REAL issue!! #climatechange#phys273#lesson11
I remember being in high school watching all these videos about our climate and environment. I only understood the concept but understanding the reasons why and the science behind it all makes this such more of a bigger issue to me personally, and hopefully the world
Not only is entropy the measure of disorder, meaning less order equals a higher entropy, but in an isolated system the entropy of the system increases over time. #Lesson3#2ndLawofThermodynamics
The issue with electricity generation is in our ability to transfer electricity over great distances so we use large grids to transmit electricity to power lines and in turn, our homes and buildings. #Lesson3
Unfortunately though, the majority of this sourced energy is thermal, from power plants powered by fossil fuels. Hopefully learning more about how to effectively store and transfer more renewable energy sources will change this soon! #Lesson3
based on the Sankey Diagram for Canada, oil is the most highly produced energy source and dominates the transport sector, accounting for 91% of the energy consumed for transportation. #Activity#Lesson4
This also holds true for Germany for example, with oil accounting for 93% of transportation, yet their oil is almost all imported, rather than produced like in Canada. #Lesson4
The Suncor video was so clearly propaganda promoting their company for monetary incentives. They explain how much they've invested in their community organizations and reassure the audience by stating how they're reusing water on-site to "reduce waste" #Lesson5#Suncor
Greenpeace uses a handful of detailed references to back their claims and concern, for example stating the negative effects of tailings ponds like seepage into ground water and toxicity for fish populations, in the hopes of bringing environmental awareness #Lesson5#Greenpeace
I'm torn between the two videos and viewpoints on "oil sands", as the Canadian government labels them. I understand the negative environmental impacts, but I also know how many employees Suncor supports (my father's company works closely with Suncor)...#Lesson5
That being said, we could think about all the potential job openings that would come with finally investing in the infrastructure and technology involved in increasing our renewable energy sector!!!! Hope!!! #Lesson5#FossilFuels
I actually drove by the Ivanpah solar power facility in the Nevada desert on my way to Las Vegas from L.A. and it was the brightest thing I had ever seen. Talk about a powerful grid! #Lesson6#SolarPower
I love the concept of Net metering for solar power: recycling excess energy back into the grid and relaying it to the community with associated credits. A great way to promote renewable energy and community cooperation! #Lesson6#NetMetering
Wind energy definitely has the least amount of negative impacts, in fact I quite enjoy them visually because they represent a tangible effort for change and progression in our energy sector! #Lesson7#WindPower
Although Tidal power has more energy potential than wind considering the density of water and the resulting power on turbines. That being said, tidal had very specific site requirements which narrow its effectiveness globally! #Lesson7#TidalPower
