While a review is currently ongoing at @DeptofFHed on the future of PhDs in Ireland, non-EU PhDs are needlessly suffering as a result of this policy now. SFI centres are underspending, resources are available to help but are prevented by these archaic policies

Our data reveals that the vast majority of PhD researchers are not allowed claim for these expenses and are left to shoulder the cost themselves, despite having more than enough expense money left to cover it. This is pushing non-EU PhDs further below the minimum wage

SFI PhD researchers have funding earmarked for research expenses e.g. travel, visas for conferences and equipment. However, SFI blocks these monies for being used to pay for the IRP and insurance, despite them being mandatory and thus essential to conducting research

All SFI PhDs are already paid 22% below the minimum wage as standard. However, despite being adverstised as fully funded PhDs, non-EU researchers have to pay an additional €1000 euro in mandatory health insurance and the annual renewal of the Irish Residency Permit

Today we sent a public letter to @PhilipNolan_SFI, Director General of the SFI @scienceirel, the largest funder of PhDs in Ireland.

We asked for unequivocal advice to all SFI centres to let non-EU PhDs claim expenses for mandatory insurance and the Irish Residence Permit 1/6

Ireland also has the second highest cost of living in Europe, and PhDs have no employment contracts and therefore no employee protections or rights.

€55k is a step forwards for new PhDs. **But** it is insulting and disrespectful to those already here, who earn between €6.5k and €18.5k for **the same research**. This is blatant, unacceptable pay discrimination. We demand equality now.
