Today is World Bee Day 🐝🍯
The Princess of Wales and her Middleton family have been involved with beekeeping for well over a decade, with roots dating back to at least 2011.
Catherine herself has looked after bees and produced her own honey for many years as a longtime personal hobby, well before it became public knowledge in 2021.
🐝 2011: The Middleton family—parents Michael and Carole, along with sisters Catherine and Pippa—gifted James Middleton a nucleus of 1,000 Buckfast bees (plus hive and equipment) for his 24th birthday.
This family effort sparked or significantly deepened their shared interest in beekeeping. James has maintained hives at the family home in Bucklebury, Berkshire, ever since (now around 15 years).
Catherine was actively involved in choosing and presenting this gift, reflecting early family enthusiasm for the hobby.
🐝 2010s (pre-2021): Beekeeping was a private family passion tied to nature, mindfulness, and sustainability.
Catherine participated in family activities around the hives and developed her own interest during this period.
It is consistently described as one of her “longtime hobbies,” with some accounts suggesting hands-on involvement spanning well over a decade by the mid-2020s.
She was looking after bees privately well before establishing or expanding her personal setup.
🐝 By 2020–2021: Catherine had her own established beehives at Anmer Hall (the Wales family’s Norfolk home on the Sandringham Estate). She was actively tending them and making her own honey.
In June 2021, she publicly shared jars of Anmer Hall honey with schoolchildren at the Natural History Museum, explaining that it came from her personal beehives. This was the first public confirmation of her apiary and honey production.
🐝 Catherine has continued the hobby openly, sharing photos and videos in full beekeeping gear while tending her hives (e.g., for World Bee Day in 2023 and later updates). She harvests, bottles, and shares her own honey for both private gifts and public engagements.
Prince William has playfully noted her expertise (“Catherine’s got her own bees, she knows a lot about bees”). She and brother James still compare notes on their respective hives.
🍯 Making her own honey remains central to Catherine’s practice. She manages the full process at Anmer Hall—from hive care to harvesting and bottling—and has done so for years.
This activity is a cherished family tradition, much like in Prince William’s family, where his father, the King, has been producing honey on his Highgrove estate for decades.
