Every herbivorous mammal is capable of eating meat. Plants are difficult to digest, which is why herbivores have gigantic guts and complex digestive systems.

Rabbits pass all food through their gut twice by eating pellets. Ruminants have multiple stomachs, and chew their cud. Horses & elephants are hindgut fermenters (this is not as efficient as ruminants). Even kangaroos have a four-chambered stomach.

Carnivores have it easy. They have far simpler digestive tracts and only one stomach. Occasionally a carnivore specializes in something tough like bones (lammergeiers & hyenas) and then needs potent acid, but the overall design is still simple. That's why a cheetah has a skinny waist, and an impala is more plump. Hippos are hugely fat.

But here's the thing. If you have the digestive apparatus to handle plants, then meat is no problemo. When a hippo or a cow or an elephant eats meat, it digests just fine. I've seen a cow eat a lizard. I've seen a deer eat a pigeon. The reason you don't see most herbivores go after meat is not because they can't eat it, but because they aren't physically designed to take it down.

While humans can and do eat plants, obviously, we can't eat the tough plants like grass and most tree leaves. We can only eat trivially easy plants. We can't even handle late-season dandelion leaves. And our digestive tract is carnivorous in nature. Notice that big belly on gorillas? They are almost 100% herbivores. We're not.

So smoke that brisket with pride. You've earned it over the last 600 million years of evolution.
