Hindu India had documented transactions of mortgage loans long before the Britishers could read and write.

“The inscribed brick in the case below was found by Markham Kittoe in a field in the Junpur district. He was an officer in India and became the 'Archaeological Enquirer' to the government in the North Western Provinces.

The brick is dated Sunday 11 June 1217 and written in Sanskrit mixed with the local dialect in Nagari script.

It records a mortgage against a loan and provides important information about Indian social and land laws. It was reported in several 19th-century publications.”

I hail from Bihar and have personally witnessed the issues Ajit has described.
During my board examinations, my name was officially altered by adding the surname “Kumar.” This was done solely so that teachers, upon seeing my original surname, would not fail me.
I subsequently changed my name during medical college, a process that proved both lengthy and arduous.
At the time, thousands of individuals shared the surname Kumar just to avoid any consequences of adding surname.

While caste discrimination is frequently discussed, with so-called upper castes routinely portrayed as oppressors, little attention is paid to atrocities of this nature.
Few are willing to address this uncomfortable truth, as it contradicts the prevailing narrative.
It takes guts and courage to discuss such uncomfortable truth on that platform.
